Thinking in innovative ways

This week's assignment was to find an object that can be used in a way other than what its original purpose. I noticed tires have many different purposes. Their original design was to put on vehicles to make them mobile. These include, but are not limited to: bikes, buses, cars, trucks, air planes, skateboards, roller blades, roller skates, carts and many more. They can also be used as a cushioning floor on children's playgrounds. They are also used in landfills as covers. They cover the waste that is dumped there. Gardeners also use old tires for planters. To incorporate these new uses with the old, I would change the composition of the tires to be more biodegradable. This would allow for the tires to decompose into fertilizer. This would help the plants in the planters grow and be healthy. It would also help the waste in the landfills decompose faster. As cushioning material, if it decomposed, then it wouldn't be toxic or leave black marks on the children or their clothes (which frequently happens) and could be easily replaced.

  1. The world is leaning more and more towards a green era. If we could make biodegradable tires, we could limit the amount of waste and be able to reuse those tires for other things. Reusing old tires is a great idea too. The more we can reuse an item, the less it goes completely to waste.

  2. I agree that using tires for other functions after they are no longer functional is a great idea. I also agree that we should make tires more biodegradable with these future functions. like the playground, in mind. The more we can use an item, even if it has been deemed "useless," the more our world will benefit.

  3. Do you think a biodegradable tire would be able to endure the wear that rubber tires can? Creating an organic tire seems a little impractical, but certainly ideal. Also, when you mention the playground are you referring to actual tires or recycled tire bits? Recycling the bits seems to work now. Also another use for tires is in athletic training.

  4. If the tires were easily biodegradable do you think there may be any limitations to the performance of the actual tire. I think that thats an awesome idea but if it takes away from safety then it would be a huge drawback. But there are alot of different uses for tires. In Arizona they have experimented in making them into highways. So smooth by the way.
