Networking

I made a network connection with Mr. Matt Starr. He works for Navair. On Tuesday, September 14, 2010, I had dinner with him and we got to know each other and discussed his job. His job is working with the Navy and Marines. He is a civilian, but works closely with the military. Today, Wednesday, September 15, 2010, I talked to Mr. Starr at the career fair. We talked about what jobs an electrical engineer (my major) would be hired to do. He also told me Navair offers summer internships and told me that the interviews for the internships were not happening, but I should go online to their website and find the dates and other information. I found him on Facebook and I plan to use Facebook to keep in touch with him.

  2. Mary,

It sounds like you've got a good connection going. It's great that you're keeping in contact with him even though they may not be interviewing at this time. Then, when the interviews come around you may be one of the people he goes to for opportunities. Do you think it will be worth keeping in touch with him for the possibility of a future internship or move on to find other opportunities? I ask because I think a lot of us find it hard to keep in touch with people when we aren't getting something out of it at the moment. Maybe you feel differently.

You mentioned that you "talked about what jobs an electrical engineer (my major) would be hired to do." Did any of this peak your interest? I'm wondering if you've found the right major for yourself right away or are still questioning it.

"I found him on Facebook and I plan to use Facebook to keep in touch with him." Have you found Facebook to be one of your most useful tools? I ask because it has certainly helped me find people and wonder if others have found its use as well.

  3. I agree that it looks like you have a plan for your future going with this connection. How often do you talk to Mr. Starr? It seems like a fine balance is needed, and I was curious as to how you did that. Also, were there other opportunities to build connections with other people in the same sort of setting? I like that you found a good connection with one person, but it might be more enriching for you if you continued to do this with other future employers. Finally, what made you choose to connect with Mr. Starr? Were there any characteristics about him personally that you could borrow in your own life? If so, it could be useful to begin adopting these now, so you can be prepared when you get in a situation similar to his.

Wow, this is great news! I wish I could say the same, I haven't really done much in the way of internships or summer jobs yet. I really need to get on the ball for that. How did you end up having dinner with Matt Starr? I'm wondering if it was the career fair or some other place. I only ask because I need to find some connections to get some form of a summer job after this school year.
What field do you plan on going into with an electrical engineering degree? My cousin is an EE, and he does something as random as writing patents for airplane parts now. The degree is quite flexible, to say the least.
Are there any other social networking tools you have been using to further enhance your job opportunities? I would like to find as many ways to get an internship this summer as possible.
Good luck with your job hunt and keeping in touch with Matt.

  5. I am surprised how the experience you had on building network not in peers, but in people who already start working. I guess getting a job and internship is what you are looking for, but at the same you shouldn't narrow your network to only people can advise or help you find job. So my first question is how can build a strong network in all aspect, not just engineering. Secondly, why electrical engineering ? It seems you sure that your jobs is going to be related to electrical engineering. However, if you have open mind to other different jobs, it might be easier for you to find one. Also trying different jobs give you different experiences and thoughts, and it might also somehow help you in your future electrical engineer career. My last question for you is how can you build your network in different ways and with variable people in your network ? For instance, join a club ? Even the club is not related to engineering or won't help you to find a job directly, the different people in the club will definitely help not in some other ways.
